I have always wanted to paint this house since I saw an old black and white photograph of it. I was astonished to discover it was built in Manchester-by-the-sea, MA somewhere we visit frequently. Then my heart fell when I read that it had been demolished in 1929! Who could have...why!? I was heartsick for days. I did read that someone up in Maine had taken the plans and rebuilt it on Swan's Island so I felt better, but still very sad. I decided to bring it back to life in its original form and location in my work. Having no idea what its true colors were, I did take artistic license. I would have loved to have been a guest here, spent an afternoon lounging on the porch, driving through the porte cochere....a girl can dream. Magnificent architecture needs to be preserved. It is our heritage.
Debra Bretton Robinson grew up in Plaistow, NH and received her degree from the Mass College of Art in Boston. She and her family reside in MA. Debra is now a participant in the vibrant Lowell, MA art scene. Her acrylic paintings on canvas concentrate on the natural landscapes and architecture of New England in vibrating colors. Most of her work is done "en plein air" or on site, outdoors. Frequently her scenes are painted while on her “floating studio”, her husband’s boat, while he fishes. Her style borders between representational and abstract. The colors and lines of her paintings are inspired by Matisse during the Fauvist movement. The talents of several other artists she continues to draw upon are: William Henry...
